William Cairncross Building

Why is it Significant?

Located in Brisbane’s Albert Street, near the intersection with the Queen Street Mall, this two-storey brick and masonry set of shops was constructed circa 1865 for retired baker and confectioner, William Cairncross. It is one of only two known surviving commercial design by architect James Cowlishaw. Tenants of the building have included tradesmen, restaurants and other eating establishments.

Why is it at Risk?

Although the heritage significance of the building has been identified by the Brisbane City Council, it is not exempt from demolition.

What needs to be done?

Any development which may occur on the site takes into account the heritage significance of the place.
