OUR HERITAGE AT RISK - WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Selection Process

Individuals, groups and local government were encouraged to complete the nomination form and liaise directly with the National Trust on any heritage place where the threat meets the criteria for nomination. Based on nominations received and a review of existing documentation and consideration by the Built Environment Working Committee a short list was developed for endorsement by the Executive of the National Trust.

Nominations closed on 18 April and the Western Australia Top 10 List for 2008 was announced on 1 July.

This year, the Built Environment Working Committee and the Heritage Department chose to highlight the issue of "demolition by neglect". Many heritage places around the State are were identified as being in danger of demolition by neglect. This can be attributed to several reasons, including lack of incentives for re-use and conservation; lack of resources to undertake conservation; economic benefits leading from demolition; indecision over future uses etc. These include both government and privately owned places which demonstrate how wide spread the issues and problems are. Some examples of these places include the Armadale Brickworks, South Fremantle Power Station and the Lynwood homestead on the Great Northern Highway.
