OUR HERITAGE AT RISK - SOUTH AUSTRALIA - 2008
Place: Undayla Road Bridge, Old Main North Road, Undayla
Threat: Loss of heritage values through neglect of maintenance

Significance:
Undayla road bridge was erected in 1879. Its abutments were built by the local stonemason Joseph Mellor. It is one of only five bowstring arch road bridges built in South Australia, and the only one with a `handle’ – the member which ties the twin arches at their apex. It is this element which has led the bridge to be known as the basket bridge.
Threat:
Rust and concrete cancer are slowly destroying the bridge. Unless essential maintenance is carried out the bridge will be lost through decay.
Action Required:
The Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council, who own the bridge, need to commence a program of regular maintenance.
