OUR HERITAGE AT RISK -  AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY - 2007

Place:    Un-Processed Act Heritage Nominations Backloge

Nominated Places Listed As Registration Status 1 On The Act Heritage Register

Threat:  Neglect and Devaluation of Heritage Values

Significance:

Every nomination has extensive documentation and a statement of significance.  As a whole they represent an extensive collection of places with natural (geological, biological) and cultural (Aboriginal & European history, architecture, engineering) significance which demonstrate the history of the ACT.

Risk:

There are approximately 200 non-processed heritage nominated places listed on the ACT Heritage Register.  The lack of processing of these nominations means that a substantial number of places representative of ACT natural and cultural heritage are afforded inadequate legislative protection.  This has resulted in some places being demolished, others losing their fabric of others deteriorating.

Desired outcome:

The Trust urges the ACT Heritage Council to reconsider all the Status 1 nominations with a view expeditiously moving them to a higher status and/or full listing.
