Thomas Gribble’s House (The Valley)

Why is it Significant?
‘The Valley’ represents the evolution of dwellings of small land holders in the late 1800s.
The builder, Thomas Gribble, was a successful small land holder. He and his family lived on the site from the 1860s until 1964; they
were contributors to the economic, social and sporting life of the Ginninderra region. All three stages of construction are
visible.
Why is it at Risk?
Although a CMP was done for the site over five years ago no conservation work has been done and
the site has been left to deteriorate even though it is listed on the ACT Heritage Register. However, funds have been allocated from
the 2010 budget towards a conservation programme which is expected to commence in the near future.
What needs to be done?
The outdated CMP should be reviewed and revised and an implementation plan drawn to properly
conserve the site in accordance with the conservation objectives outlined in the Heritage nomination. The highly friable nature of
the pisé construction puts this place at a very high risk of irreparable damage.
