OUR HERITAGE AT RISK - NORTHERN TERRITORY- 2008

Place:   Stella Maris Site, Darwin

Threat:  Heritage values threatened by uncetrain future for site

Significance:

This is one of the few remaining undeveloped Lots on the escarpment overlooking the Waterfront at  Darwin.  The original Traveller’s Walk (also known as Chinaman’s Walk) that led up from the wharf area to the town passed through the site.   It has links to the former North Australia Railway with one of the few remaining Railway Houses still in existence on the Lot. This house has recently been declared a heritage place and is being conserved by the  Heritage Branch of the government. It was also the site of the Catholic Church’s Mission to Seamen.

Threat:

The Church recently handed the lease back to the government and the property is now in limbo.

Desired Outcome / Vision:
The Trust believes that this important heritage site must remain in community hands and not be developed with another highrise block of units. The longer it has no proscribed future, the greater the possibility for inappropriate development.
