OUR HERITAGE AT RISK -  QUEENSLAND - 2008

Place:        Shute Harbour Marina (proposed)

Threat:     Devaluation

Significance:

The Whitsunday region is considered an environmentally rich area of Queensland. Its natural beauty and closeness to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park has led locally to the development of an important tourist industry based in the vicinity of Airlie Beach/Shute Harbour. The hills of the Conway National Park landward of Shute Harbour are clad in natural rainforest. The park also features secluded beaches and panoramic views over the Whitsundays.

Statement of Risk:

The proposal for development of a marina at Shute Harbour involves a marina encompassing 669 berths, with associated tourism and commercial facilities, in close vicinity to the Conway National Park. The proposal is in the Environmental Impact Statement phase. Included in the project will be the construction of public boat launch and trailer parking for the public.

Degree of Risk:                   At risk

Threats/Risks:                    Devaluation

Fate/outcome:                     Stable

Community concern has been expressed over the impact of this proposed development on such an environmentally sensitive area. Coastal development is regarded as one of the biggest issues facing the long term health and viability of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Desired Outcome:

Community involvement would ensure that overdevelopment does not occur under the guise of provision of public amenities.
