South Australia

Location: Lochiel Park, Campbelltown

Threat:     Development for housing

This lovely area of riverside parkland is now under threat from housing development. Of continuing significance to the local Kaurna people and treasured by the local community, the 15 hectares of Lochiel Park should be retained as communal open space, not destroyed by development as is presently proposed.

The Park contains a number of significant trees, including several Aboriginal ‘canoe trees’, as well as Lochend House, the former home of the founder of Campbelltown, Charles Campbell. An old TAFE College, Broadway Oval and several other public facilities currently occupy the site, as well as substantial open space.

Despite commitments from the present government, (when in opposition), to save all of the Park, and major community support for the retention of the Park, plans are proceeding for intensive housing development. These should not proceed. The area should remain a riparian parkland, available to all.
