Place:   Proposal for Shale oil project south of Proserpine

Threat: Damage

 

Significance:

The Goorganga Plain wetlands are south of Proserpine. The area supports grazing, forestry and sugar cane production. The aggregate wetlands which feed into the Proserpine River are listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. They support a range of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems which include a variety of wildlife, including rare and threatened species.

 

Statement of Risk:

A resources company will this year decide whether to seek government approval for a strip mining operation in the cane lands south of Proserpine. A refinery is also being considered. Of concern is the risk of pollution to the Whitsunday area of the Great Barrier Reef.

Desired Outcome:

That the risks associated with this proposal which will impact on the Goorganga Plain wetlands and the Great Barrier Reef are realised and acted upon.
