OUR HERITAGE AT RISK - SOUTH AUSTRALIA - 2008
Place: Port Adelaide Customs House 30 Commercial Road, Port Adelaide
Threat: Loss of heritage values through neglect

Significance:
This impressive building is located in a prominent position in Port Adelaide's Heritage precinct adjacent to other significant buildings such as Port Adelaide Town Hall. It is one of the most dominant historic public buildings in Port Adelaide and is an excellent example of a Victorian Italianate public building as well as being a well-built 191h Century Customs House. The building is close to the waterfront and other tourist attractions.
Threat:
The building has been empty for more than 20 years and is now deteriorating rapidly. The exterior façade is unsightly with peeling paint, cracking, boarded up windows, and the detritus of neglect including accumulated pigeon droppings on all flat surfaces. This landmark building which is listed on the SA State Heritage Register is now in a very vulnerable state and suffering from demolition by neglect.
Action Required:
The Customs House needs to be repaired and occupied. This landmark building, which is located in the heart of Port Adelaide’s tourist precinct has many potential uses including as a function centre, tourist accommodation, museum or a community centre (with meeting rooms). The South Australian Heritage Places Act contains provisions designed to protect State Heritage listed items from demolition by neglect. These should be implemented in order to ensure this important building is saved and used.
