Paperlinx (AKA Burnie Paper Mill, Tas Paper)
Why is it Significant?
The Paper Mill site provides fine examples of ‘state of the art’ equipment of its
time where new techniques were developed and implemented on a commercial scale.
Why is it at Risk?
The site consists of numerous deco and post modern style commercial and industrial
buildings, some of which have already fallen into a state of disrepair through a staged abandonment associated with the sites commercial closure.
As the vast site has a long association with heavy industry there is a great risk that the sites cultural, social and physical heritage
attributes could be overlooked and destroyed making way for new development given its location on key coastal land. There is currently no
management plan for the site to identify and preserve the numerous fine examples of deco and post modern structures.
What needs to be done?
Successful adaptive re use of buildings marinating the integrity of heritage
values.
