New
South Wales
Place: Rustic Roads – Plomer Road Crescent Head to Point
Plomer, Northern Coastal, NSW
Threat: Development - Sealing
Significance of Place
This unsealed roadway was constructed in the early settlement
period. In its current rustic condition it forms part of the
historical rural landscape linking many aspects of the settlement
period to contemporary life.
In its
present form, condition and appearance it makes a major
contribution to the scenic, cultural and historic value of the land
through which it passes.
The
coastline between Crescent Head and the Hastings River is one of
the most ecologically diverse, important and unspoilt areas on the
NSW coast. This area has retained these qualities because of the
low-key rustic condition of the Plomer Road.
Senior
elders of the Thungutti Nation have stated that the Plomer Road
runs through and over their sacred sites – tarring over these sites
would be a discretion.
Description of
Threat
Kempsey
Shire Council plans to tar seal this rustic road despite
considerable local and state-wide opposition.
Action
Required
Kempsey
Shire Council should not proceed with its planned tar sealing, and
the road should be considered for state and local heritage
listing.
