OUR HERITAGE AT RISK - NORTHERN TERRITORY-
2008
Place: Katherine Railway Precinct
Threat: Degradation of heritage values through lack of communicated vision and
plan
Significance:
The precinct is a large area of land in the centre of Katherine. It has many
interesting features including tracks, the old Railway Station, loading platforms, a locomotive and the Katherine Railway Bridge.
Threat:
It suffers from a lack of a clear Conservation Management Plan. This means that
inappropriate and often contradictory actions take place within its boundaries. Lack of clear interpretive signage and no
boundary marking means that many people are unaware of the size or relevance of this large slice of land. Consequently its heritage values
are unseen and often abused.
