OUR HERITAGE AT RISK - WESTERN AUSTRALIA - 2007
Place: Historic Archaeological Sites
Threat: Development Pressures / Destruction
Significance:
Archaeological sites have the potential to reveal information about the history of particular sites and places that can not be found out in any other way. This evidence can be destroyed through building excavations and ground disturbances brought about by new developments or maintenance works. In areas which are historically significant, more consideration should be given to what lays under the ground as well as above.
Statement of Risk
Degree of Risk: Ongoing
Threats/Risks: Destruction
Fate/Outcome: Suffering
Desired Outcome/Vision:
Better consultation and measures put in place to ensure that the potential archaeological values of a site are considered in the management of the site. This could include clauses in the relevant Town Planning Scheme which would require an archaeological survey to be carried out as a condition of planning approval which the City of Fremantle has recently implemented.
