Griffith Oval No. 1
Why is it Significant?
Griffith Oval No. 1 is a rare and unique example in its comparative intactness of mature
deciduous plantings which form a dense perimeter ring around the oval, providing a largely intact historical landscape setting. The mature
plantings represent sequential planting at the site which began in the 1930s and extended through to the 1950s.
Why is it at Risk?
Brumbies Rugby Club applied for a Territory Plan Variation in January 2010 (rezoning from Urban
Open Space to Restricted Access Recreation) to permit development that will destroy c.1930 oval and trees; construct buildings within oval
perimeter; remove public access for sports/recreation. Imminent loss of significant intact example of early Canberra’s sporting/landscape
history.
What needs to be done ?
• Retention of Griffith Oval No. 1 as a public oval and district sports ground
• Retention of the current Territory Plan zoning as PRZ1, Urban Open Space
• Retention of all the mature trees on the site, particularly the encircling English Elms
• Retention of public access to the oval for a variety of sports and recreational activities
• Full heritage listing of the oval and surrounds.
