Jezzine Barracks

Significance:

In Queensland, heritage places owned by the Commonwealth may have links to defence, customs or postal services. They vary in size and purpose but are significant in that they represent pre-Federation solutions to what became national issues or services. Their historic and social significance is considerable.

Statement of Risk:

Degree of Risk:           Immediate Risk – no solution agreed

Threats/Risks:             Destruction or Neglect

Fate/outcome:            Surviving

Heritage places in Queensland owned by the Commonwealth cannot be entered in the Queensland Heritage Register. On occasion, the interval between when a heritage place located on Commonwealth property is sold, and the place is nominated to the Queensland Heritage Register, can extend to months. This can leave the heritage place at risk.

For those places sold by the Commonwealth prior to State heritage legislation protection being applicable, heritage recognition (and protection) is not defined.

Desired Outcome / Vision:

A procedure be formalised whereby heritage places owned by the Commonwealth in Queensland, and subject to disposal, would automatically be provided with interim heritage protection. This to remain in place while their heritage significance to Queensland is assessed and their nomination to the Queensland Heritage Register considered.
