OUR HERITAGE AT RISK - QUEENSLAND - 2007
Place: Cemetery Gravesites
Threat: Neglect and Devaluation of Heritage Values

Significance:
Cemeteries and gravesites, be they isolated or urban, hold social and spiritual significance for the community. The special place of cemeteries as part of community values and identity transcends religion or ethnicity.
Statement of Risk:
Degree of Risk: At Risk – no solution agreed
Threats / Risks: Deterioration
Fate/outcome: Suffering
Headstones and graves are suffering through vandalism, vegetation overgrowth and lack of maintenance. A more mobile population and breakdown of community connections with cemeteries mean fewer or no family members caring for individual allotments.
Desired Outcome / Vision:
A process needs to be established which would provide clear guidelines for all parties involved in cemetery preservation.
