Significance:
The Cairns Yacht Club was opened on
27 July 1920. It replaced an earlier building which had been severely damaged by a
cyclone. As well as providing a training and competition base for yachting enthusiasts, the Club served as a social and recreational facility
for Cairns. During the Second World War the lower section was given over to naval
purposes. The upper clubroom has continued to be used as a venue for social events.
Statement of Risk:
The building is located on the
Esplanade in Cairns. Following nomination to the Queensland Heritage Register in
2002, the Cairns Yacht Club was not entered. Although nominated to the National Heritage List, it was not entered. This section of Trinity
Inlet is subject to redevelopment.
